I received some questions from students about what it means to be a member of Magnus, so I thought I would put together this little FAQ:
- What is the Magnus Society? 🤔
The Magnus Society is the STEAM special interest club of Cempaka for students, but teachers and staff are also welcome! STEAM is the combination of Science, Technology, Art and Maths that makes up advanced fields like Engineering - our Computer Science subject is an Engineering subject.
- Is Magnus fun? 😬

- What do you do at Magnus? 🤨
Magnus is a safe haven for Cempaka nerds! If it is, uses, runs on or is related to tech in any way, we want to do it; but we generally like to focus on the things that are not taught in CS class. We also want to use this to keep tech interests accessible to students who do not take CS.
We hope to have activities under three major branches for which we have communities:
- MaGIC - the Magnus Gaming Interest Community 🎮
- MagMA (Magnus Mind Adventures) - for board and card games 🎴
- MaCE - the Magnus Coding Endeavour 🖥️
- Who is a member of Magnus? 🤓
A member of Magnus is any current student of Cempaka who is a part of our Schoology group, and therefore has access to our events, communications and media.
- How do I become a member? 🧐
Simple! Just fill up the membership form and we'll add you.
- Do I have to attend every event, meeting or gathering? 📅
Of course not! Just join us whenever you're available!
- Do I get anything for being a member? 🎖
Members who participate in activites get CAS points for being active, so be sure to list your participation in your CAS books! For major events, we may also give out e-certificates.
Note: we DO NOT count attendance for some events - like spectators at live streams.
- What are my responsibilities as a member? 👩💻
We encourage you to join any of our events that interest you whenever you are available. You are not obligated to do anything more as a Magnus member, but we appreciate any further involvement we can get!
- Can I do more for Magnus? 👨🏭
Of course! If we need help with an event, we'll ask on the group and Discord server, and you can let us know if you're interested!
- What's the deal with the owl? 🦉
We wanted our symbol to represent wisdom, and peak design. The owl checks a lot of boxes.
We promise it's not because one of our Presidents was terrified of birds.
- What are Magnus members into? ☕
We welcome everyone, and we don't gatekeep our members' interests. We have lovers of gaming, tea drinking, fancy hats, plushies, Brooklyn Nine-Nine (noice), comfy pillows, and moar!
